So on Tuesday Iranian President Ahmadinejad came out and blamed capitalism and global big business for the poverty in the world. Now I know we agree that his statement is correct, but I think we need to be worried what the ruling elites will do with this statement. I know the Tea Baggers are going to start going around saying “if your against capitalism you support Al-Qaeda”. I think we need to be prepared for this bullshit. I can easily see a linking of anti-capitalists to radical Islam now. That means us, the Anarchists and whatever Noam Chomsky is.
But not to take that lying down, Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel, declared that market economies were the cure for poverty. I know, I had a good laugh at that myself. Especially considering how “successful” markets have been for the third world, like more than doubling the poverty in Mexico.
This all took place at a three-day anti-poverty summit at the UN building. In attendance were 140 presidents, prime ministers and kings. I’m sorry just seems funny to me that kings are concerned about poverty and seek to end it worldwide.
Ahmadinejad did however mention great measure to end world poverty like “undemocratic and unjust” global decision-making bodies, which are dominated by the United States and other Western powers.
“It is my firm belief that in the new millennium, we need to revert to the divine mindset…based on the justice-seeking nature of mankind, and on the monotheistic world view…”
Not to outdone, Angela Merkel countered with the tired old argument:
“The primary responsibility for development lies with the governments of the developing countries… The countries themselves must promote the development of a market economy…for without self-sustaining economic growth developing countries will find the road out of poverty and hunger too steep to travel.”
A great plan which myself and I’m sure the rest of you whole heartedly agree with. What I would like to see is that actually being done; she’s deliberately overlooking the economic impact that is forced on the third world by the leading nations like Germany. National and economic autonomy to operate as chosen by the people is the only way it’s going to eliminate poverty. Too bad that isn’t what the First World rams down the Third World’s throat.
Later Hillary Clinton launched a new charity program to place cleaner cooking stoves in 100 million homes by 2020. She said that this program is intended to save 3 billion lives because they use stoves made of toxic chemicals. While this program will do good by providing new stoves to the world’s poor, I hope they don’t buy these stoves from China. A lot of their products are already poisonous.
