The timing of events could not have been any better. As the U.S. condemned Russia for taking a proactive stance against ISIS in Syria with bombings, it carried out a actual bombing crime. The U.S. just recently bombed a “Doctors without Borders” hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan. An unconfirmed number of people have been killed by the blast. There is no need to remind anyone that the bombing of a medical facility is one of the most abhorrent war crimes that can be committed. The intentional murder of people who are unable to defend themselves, people who are civilians, doctors who have taken pledges to do no harm, is beyond reprehensible.
As with every crime the U.S. commits, there is a period of handling the crisis that show how dishonest they truly are. In the immediate aftermath of the devastation the U.S. media began claiming that they “may have” , or “is accused of” bombing the hospital. The facts are already clear, the U.S. is guilty. At this stage the imperialist propaganda machine is treading carefully with the hopes that the incident can be plausibly denied. As the evidence began to emerge, they changed their story to, a U.S. bombing “may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility.”
Usually in these cases the victims are locals, the very people they’re declaring war on, so it’s easy to brush off. Largely because the racist U.S. public at large doesn’t care about the people they occupy. This time it’s different, Doctors without Borders are Westerns with a high level of education that the media will believe if they say the U.S. was involved. The media in this case will care that innocent people were bombed because they were mostly White Westerners, from a White Western organization. The media cannot simply ignore them.
Thus began the second stage, where the U.S. claimed it was an accident. They hit the wrong place, their intelligence gave them the wrong location. We begin to hear about how the U.S. is the great civilizer desperately trying to save Afghanistan from the barbarity of the Taliban. This becomes their story, it was an accident, and those that died were a regretful incident of “collateral damage.” They apologize and say it was not intended, so we can then go on as though nothing happened.
Not this time.
Doctors without Borders published numerous facts about the incident that took place. DwB told the U.S. where their hospital was, they had handed them the GPS coordinates. They even said they had repeatedly given the coordinates. According to them, they were mostly recently given on the 29th of September, which was five days before the incident. Making matters even worse, they had contacted U.S. while they were being bombed. The hospital was hit repeatedly over the course of 30 minutes in which they desperately called out to the U.S. to stop bombing them.
This medical facility has been the target of malicious operations in the past. In July the hospital was raided and seized by Afghan Special Forces claiming that an Al Qaeda member was a patient. This incident drew the ire of the DwB staff (a.k.a. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
The French aid group said its hospital was temporarily closed to new patients after armed soldiers had entered and behaved violently towards staff.
“This incident demonstrates a serious lack of respect for the medical mission, which is safeguarded under international humanitarian law,” MSF said in a statement.
A staff member who works for the aid group said, “The foreign doctors tried to stop the Afghan Special Operations guys, but they went in anyway, searching the hospital.”
Now that it has been shown to clearly be a malicious deliberate attack on a hospital, the U.S. has changed its story once again. FOX News citing an anonymous “defense official”, is claiming that the bombing only took place because Al-Qaeda was using it as a base. According to the Fox News report: the military does “‘regret the loss’ of innocent life, they say the incident could have been avoided if the Taliban had not used the hospital as a base, and the civilians there as human shields.” To further this outrageous claim, The Washington Post claimed that the Taliban were hiding in the hospital and other civilian locations, including homes and Mosques. In cooperation, the Associated Press claimed they had a video that showed machine guns and other weapons being pointed out of the windows. This claim was later retracted when it was discovered that it was false.
When that lie fell apart, they fabricated another excuse for carrying out the bombing. The New York Times claimed another anonymous “defense official” said: “there was heavy gunfire in the area around the hospital at the time of the airstrike, and that initial reports indicated that the Americans and Afghans on the ground near the hospital could not safely pull back without being dangerously exposed. American forces on the ground then called for air support, senior officials said.” It also went on to claim that people on the ground believed that Taliban were hiding in the hospital and firing upon U.S. and coalition troops from that position.
“Still, some Afghan officials continued to suggest that the attack was justified. “I know that there were civilian casualties in the hospital, but a lot of senior Taliban were also killed,” said Abdul Wadud Paiman, a member of Parliament from Kunduz.”
DwB responded to this accusation by releasing the following statement:
“MSF is disgusted by the recent statements coming from some Afghanistan government authorities justifying the attack on its hospital in Kunduz. These statements imply that Afghan and US forces working together decided to raze to the ground a fully functioning hospital with more than 180 staff and patients inside because they claim that members of the Taliban were present.
“This amounts to an admission of a war crime. This utterly contradicts the initial attempts of the US government to minimize the attack as ‘collateral damage.’
“There can be no justification for this abhorrent attack on our hospital that resulted in the deaths of MSF staff as they worked and patients as they lay in their beds. MSF reiterates its demand for a full transparent and independent international investigation.”
They also said the same thing on Twitter:
Even now, this story is falling apart. NBC News has published a story where The Pentagon’s top four-star commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. John Campbell, contradicts the claim. He says that Afghan forces on the ground were not under fire from the Taliban before the hospital was bombed. Quote: “local Afghans forces asked for air support and U.S. forces were not under direct fire just prior to the U.S. bombardment.” This directly contradicts the previous claim that the bombing was justified because U.S. troops were under attack. They lied.
DwB released a statement regarding this final admission:
“Today the US government has admitted that it was their airstrike that hit our hospital in Kunduz and killed 22 patients and MSF staff. Their description of the attack keeps changing—from collateral damage, to a tragic incident, to now attempting to pass responsibility to the Afghanistan government. The reality is the US dropped those bombs. The US hit a huge hospital full of wounded patients and MSF staff. The US military remains responsible for the targets it hits, even though it is part of a coalition. There can be no justification for this horrible attack. With such constant discrepancies in the US and Afghan accounts of what happened, the need for a full transparent independent investigation is ever more critical.”
This latest incident of senseless murder shows the absolute disregard the U.S. has for human life. U.S. imperialism has no respect for human life whatsoever. All claims of being the saviours of the world, only defending themselves from terrorism, or defending freedom, should be torn aside so that they can be seen for what they truly are: imperialist murders. This crusade by the U.S. has been nothing but the drive to achieve the complete and total subjugation of the Afghan people to the profit motive of the highest members of the global capitalist class. And to maintain the privilege of membership in the imperialist countries. This is a complete and utter crime against humanity for the benefit of profit making.
The only reason this crime has seen the light of day is because White Westerns were killed. If it had been an Afghan hospital with Afghan hospital staff, it would have been buried under the countless other crimes the U.S. has committed in the so-called War on Terror. This is the true face of the American empire, shorn of all lies and self-delusions. This is what America is, this is what it has always been.
The American people do not care about the millions who have died because of their wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They can’t even be bothered to express anger in a meaningful way. They take time out of their day to make a few statements, or make moral outrages during discussions at the dinner table. They haven’t the courage to fight their own system. They have no interest in doing so. That same system defends their global privilege that places them above those victims. Even now, why should the American people struggle against their own oppressive system? They’re all lining up behind either Donald Trump who will continue the wars, or Bernie Sanders who will hand them all their imperialist privilege while continuing the wars.
In no way shape or form should the people of America be considered the allies, or class allies of the global proletariat. Revolution MUST come from the darkest corners of the earth, where the greatest of inhumanities are carried out. Only the truly oppressed will have the motivation to rise up against their oppressors.
