According to some very interesting documents released by Wikileaks, it seems that Erich Honecker may have been meeting with David Rockefeller, Sr. It appears that in October 1979 an invitation was extended to Rockefeller by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) for a visit. The following was found in a Wikileaks document I was digging around:
KIRSTEN SAID AN INVITATION BY BEIL TO ROCKEFELLER WAS BEING TRANSMITTED TODAY TO AMBASSADOR GRUNERT IN WASHINGTON FOR DELIVERY IN PERSON TO ROCKEFELLER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. ACCORDING TO KIRSTEN, THE INVITATION DOES NOT SPECIFY A TIME FRAME AND GRUNERT IS TO GET ROCKEFELLER’S SUGGESTIONS ON DATES AND PROGRAM.
Kirsten was Director General, Beil was State Secretary when the document was written in 1979. it continues:
ASKED WHAT TIME FRAME THE GDR HAD IN MIND, KIRSTEN SAID HE ASSUMED OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER WOULD BE TOO EARLY FOR ROCKEFELLER. ASKED WHAT TOP-LEVEL OFFICIALS ROCKEFELLER WOULD LIKELY BE SCHEDULED TO SEE, KIRSTEN WAS NON-COMMITTAL
The leak goes on to imply that a meeting took place between Honecker and Rockefeller:
EMBASSY RECORDS INDICATE THAT WHEN ROCKEFELLER VISITED THE GDR IN JUNE 1975, HE WAS THE GUEST OF THEN COUNCIL OF MINISTERS CHAIRMANN SINDERMANN AND SAW ALSO THEN COUNCIL OF STATE CHAIRMAN WILLI STOPH AND FOREIGN MINISTER FISCHER. IN ADDITION TO THESE OFFICIALS THE GDR WOULD PROBABLY ARRANGE A MEETING WITH SED CHAIRMAN HONECKER.
What the two met and talked about is unknown.
