As US president Donald Trump continues his effort to scrap the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement (JCPOA), a new legal development has taken place in the US halls of law: a US judge has ruled that Iran must pay $6 billion in damages to victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attack from September 11th, 2001. As it stands, a US court has placed responsibility for the terrorist attack on the shoulders of the Iranian government. The judge made a default judgement according to the court files.
As reported by Al Jazeera:
Monday’s ruling in the case – Thomas Burnett, Sr et al v. The Islamic Republic of Iran et al – finds “the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran” liable for the deaths of more than 1,000 people as a result of the September 11 attacks, Judge George B Daniels of the Southern District Court of New York wrote.
Iran is ordered to pay “$12,500,000 per spouse, $8,500,000 per parent, $8,500,000 per child, and $4,250,000 per sibling” to the families and estates of the deceased, court filings say.
A 4.96 annual interest rate will also be applied to the amount, starting from September 11, 2001 to the date of the judgement.
The default judgement was made because the Islamic Republic Government of Iran did not contest the case.
Why Should Iran do so? There is no reason at all to expect that Iran would receive a fair legal proceeding. The US has been on a course to destroy the country, and/or carry out regime change since the US controlled dictator, the Shah, was overthrown during the Islamic revolution. Personally, I don’t think the accusation was even worthy of a response. The idea is so ridiculous that it is nothing less than an insult.
This ruling was made with literally no evidence that Iran was involved in the event. The official 9/11 investigation by the US government determined that Iran was not connected to it in any way. However, they found substantial proof that Saudi Arabia and several members of its royal family were.
While this is going on, the families of those killed on 9/11 are taking the Saudi government to court over the same attack. How is it that both governments can be responsible for the event when the proof only shows that one of them is? I think there is a very sinister plot here:
The Iranian government is automatically labelled as liable so that the Saudi lawsuit can be dismissed. The Saudis can now point to this ruling showing that Iran is culpable and avoid any consequences for their actions in helping perpetuate the events of 9/11. It seems to me that this was orchestrated in order to protect a US ally in imperialism, Saudi Arabia, and punish an anti-imperialist enemy of the US.
The whole timing of this happening as the US is seeking to end the JCPOA agreement in order to place stricter demands upon Iran – seems like no coincidence to me.
